So my boyfriend surprised me with a Betta fish to go in my bedside tank that has been empty for a while and he is really pretty, a male halfmoon. I’ve had Betta fish before and they mostly just did their thing swimming around and eating but this one is different. He tends to look at me for long periods of time before swimming in circles around his tank and then goes back to watching my me. He also has been sleeping on the side closest to me away from the stuff to hide in. In his tank is a few plants, a little rock house, and a “leaf hammock” that sticks to the tank wall. Said hammock was on the other side of the tank and he wouldn’t touch it. I moved it to the side closest to me and now he has been using it during the day as well as sleeping on it. Is this a normal behavior for a Betta or am I special?

I have one thats just like that, I think it just depends on their personality. Mitne stares at me or lurks at the place where I feed jim and swims around to check his tank once in a while. Sometimes he gets the zoomies 😄

  2. Some bettas are more interested in people than others.  Yours sounds like one of those.  They are very rewarding to interact with.  I’ve had a few like this in my time.

My favorite was still the first one I had like that -he was terrified of fingers but was so happy and wiggly when my face came close to the glass, that boy never flared.  The same time I had him another boy (in a separate tank) had bonded with my husband -always wanted his attention, would play with him… and me?  Well that betta always flared and nipped me even though I was the one with the food pffft.
