Hello everyone, I'm a college student working on a statistics project about aquariums and stress levels. I'd really appreciate it if you help by filling out this questionnaire: https://forms.gle/UJwd9Dc1Kg6npq656
Aquarium Affect on Stress Levels Survey

I think aquariums help with stress just when you are hanging with your fish and admiring them. I find the hobby quite stressful. I have multiple sclerosis and got a tank to manage stress. (Ironic)
1. I own 2 aquariums , a 75 gallon and 30 gallon
2. On a good week 1 hr on bad weeks 5- average 2-3. average stress level 3. But when the stress hits, dealing with sick fish, dead fish or leaks (filter for me) an 8. Normally it’s stress free and I enjoy them. But lately it’s been very stressful. Average I would say 3. Just big spikes in stress when things go wrong. I look forward to seeing them and talk to them. Play with them at the glass. That is all great.
4. I have my aquariums for 1.5 yrs
5. 75 gallon fresh water tropical and 30 gallon single beta male.
6. Both standard aquariums – 75 gallon marine land- 30 gallon regular.
1. Yes
2. 60
3.5
4. 8
5. 1
6. 5 gallon Betta
I got you
1. Yes
2. Depends on the week, I run high tech co2 tanks which require trimming once or twice a week. Overall 30 minutes to an hour
3. 1
4. 3+ years
5. A 5 Gallon shrimp tank and a 10 gallon betta community. Both live planted
6. The 5 gallon is a standard rimless tank and the 10 gallon is a standard rimmed tank
1. yes
2. 10-30 min
3. 7
4. 4 years
5. 3
6. freshwater planted
Stress level has very little to do with my aquariums. The most peaceful time of my day is watching them.
Edit: oops didn’t see the link but I’ve filled it out now.
It’s an interesting topic to look into. But are you also studying non aquarium owners about stress levels? How do you categorize when some may have varying levels of stress due to midterms, end of year work lay offs and kids to care for, mental health conditions, etc?
Or are you trying to discern higher stress levels from owning more tanks/spending more time on maintenance/being newer to aquarium ownership?
Or perhaps you can’t answer that for fear of it causing unwanted bias in other’s replies..
My answer won’t be as interesting now as I’ve dialed back my aquarium count a lot but I’ll fill it out.
1.Yes.
2.Less than 20 minutes- this time includes feeding.
3.With regard’s to keeping aquariums? 1. Just general life stress.. meh.. currently 2-3?
4.15+ years
5.Currently 4. Only 3 with fish. Many years ago I had over 20 running at once, that took up a good chunk of my days.
6.All are freshwater densely planted aquariums (live plants), hence low maintenance time. If you mean size: 40g, 10g, 3g, 2g.
I did the survey and answered 9 on stress. I’m a med student tho. It’s not my aquariums fault
I completed the survey. My aquariums are the most soothing thing that I’ve added to my life! I love gardening, it was my stress reducing hobby that brought me joy, but where we live, the heat kills everything, or the wild life does. After 5 years, I just gave up. Owning an aquarium has replaced that for me. I randomly started up with a 5 gallon, now have also have a 32, and planning a 75. I love spending my mornings with my coffee and cat watching watching the aquariums, discovering what new members hatched/are now big enough to see, and see the plant life flourish. It’s also where I find myself sitting on my breaks between sessions when working from home. It’s a beautiful little self contained eco system unaffected by the chaos outside of it. I equate my community tank to watching Downton Abbey. It’s not a thriller, but its interesting and calming journey with unexpected but delightful twists. It takes my mind off everything else. I never thought I’d be an aquarium owner, but here I am, obsessed with it.
