Hi, I was at my local pet store last weekend when I overheard a cashier talking about a baby betta and saw it was so little. He said nobody would probably buy it since they require so much extra care, and they typically dont accept babies at the store for that/many reasons, and it wouldnt probably survive in the store long since they're delicate. I couldnt just leave the baby.. So he gave him/her to me. I haven't kept a betta in years, but I was already prepping to get one in the new year. Meet Abyss!
Can anyone give some tips, and also just help identify anything on my tiny one? It had no label, since they couldn't technically sell it, but i think it's a crowntail? I tried looking at an age chart but this one is all black so hard to tell much other than general size. He/she is about an inch, maybe a smidgen smaller.
I have Abyss in a 5 gallon, but have a 10. I was worried to put him/her in the bigger one because its SO tiny and i wasn't sure if it was a good idea. There's a heater, silk plants, one live plant, pea gravel, and one of those beta bed leaf things (I plan to change that asap). I absolutely hate that im cycling the tank with him in it, but i had nothing set up and am unsure if that's a terrible idea. I used Prime and Stability, and have done a 25% water change every 2 days. A filter is on the way with an adjustable flow. So far the water is testing okay, but obviously no cycle is established.
He's eating blood worms and bugbites, and never seems to be full so I've been feeding 2x a day.
Thanks!

only advice I have is just check your parameters in the morning and at night while you’re fish in cycling your betta (which is super cute btw and has the coolest name) and also get some real plants for him/her
Hihii! He seems to be a black orchid crowntail, he’ll keep that black colouring but his highlights may end up being blue or silver, im bias since i also own one but they’re definitely one of the prettiest types of betta imo. Im usually against impulse buys but since the store was talking about how he likely wouldn’t be bought and just die there, in this case its understandable, you’re doing everything right with the testing and small frequent changes, only thing I’d mention is possibly a few more like plants since they can also help with keeping harmful levels down! Also for feeding, you could give a betta 24/7 access to food and they’ll always act starved lmaoo, thelr stomachs are around the same size as their eyes, so make sure he’s not getting too much in one go, bloodworms are good as a treat but best avoided as a main food source since theyre high in fats and lack most things a betta needs, the bugbites is great though. Unfortunately ive never dealt with baby bettas so can’t advise on the rest, hopefully someone with more experience can^^
