My LFS sells wild-type guppies as feeder-fish (8 for $1).

I got some years ago, and only had a handful of females left… The 15- 20gal looked empty with only 4-5 tiny, all-grey fish, so I got a couple dozen more.

There’s a couple males I like. Most are ‘meh’, but still young (and maybe dulled from stress).

This male has some of the best coloring, but a crooked spine 😔.

He is in a bachelor 5gal with the less-appealing &
and/or younger males (not colored up yet). I put crooked-spine in there in case it’s genetic.

Several of the fish have janky tail-fins. They look small or compressed, making swimming awkward. It’s mostly the smaller/younger fish displaying this. I’m chalking it up to 💩 water-quality in the feeder-fish tank.

Sorry for the poor image quality— bachelor tank needs a new light so I had to screenshot off a video with flash.

Would you let him breed?

Would you cull? I’m not sure my Albino Asian Redtail Catfish would even notice him if I put it in the 150gal… no other fish I can feed him to.

  1. AmusingAnecdote on

I wouldn’t cull him, but I wouldn’t let him breed. If he moves around all right and doesn’t appear in pain, he might be a decent candidate for a permanent time in the bachelor tank.

But breeding the crooked spine wouldn’t be a good idea.

  2. You would cull if you don’t want him to breed or if you plan to sell fish. Separate him if you don’t want to kill him.
