For context I am a total beginner and know nothing about fish.
My family plays Dirty Santa at our yearly Christmas gathering and my sister-in-law brought a betta fish. Iām tender-hearted about animals and recently lost my dog so everyone agreed I should keep the fish. I conditioned the water and fed her some already, but the tank is a pretty basic 1.5 gal cube with only a filter, no heater or anything. I made sure the water was warm but I know itāll get colder. Iāve read some care guides so the first order of business is getting a WAY bigger heated tank and adding some plants and hides.
Getting stuff shipped is going to take a little bit because of Christmas, and itās probably a couple days before I can get to a pet store, so my question is what can I do to make sure this fish is comfortable and somewhat happy in the meantime? I feel bad for leaving her in a barren little cube tank but this is all I was given to work with. In any case, I am genuinely excited to take care of this fish because itās a hobby Iāve been curious about for years. I want to make sure she has the best possible life so if anyone has any other advice or recommendations for equipment please let me know!!

Who randomly buys someone a fish and just makes them take care of it lmao
I don’t know if this is a little bit of a help to you or not, you can order any pet supplies off of doordash or ubereats. I know that Petco PetSmart and all the major pet stores will deliver through those apps. That way you’re not taking super long going through Amazon and things that nature. I’m also going to guess that you’re going to have a lot of questions (or not you might have enough answer right here on Reddit to suffice you) I’m not saying that these big box pet stores have employees that know all the questions and all the answers that you’re going to need but you can also call and talk to one of them when ordering your things that you might need if you have any questions. Most of them are pretty knowledgeable in general sense. Biggest suggestion I have right off the bat for you because this was kind of my situation as well.. try to stay away from all things artificial as far as plant decorations and hidey huts. But, that also comes with a price when planting into your tank. You’re going to need fertilizer and everything please talk to people to pet store about this or reach out and ask anybody here on Reddit they are very helpful.
I hope this helps!
May I ask, do you have a name picked out yet? You’ll be so excited when you can tell that they are acclimated and happy in their new environment because the color is going to change on that one right there like crazy! I can’t wait to see the glow up!
