Hii, could someone please help me check if my betta’s behavior is normal? He’s my first betta so I’m pretty anxious.
I got him about two weeks ago. After one week I upgraded him from a 5 gallon tank to a 10 gallon tank. He has been in the 10 gallon for 6 days now and was doing really well.
The problem is the new filter I bought for this tank, it has been making a loud rattling or buzzing noise since the start. Yesterday it became way too loud so I took it out to check, so I tried reinstalling it but the noise was still there. I couldn’t fix it so I had to put it back temporarily and ordered a new one which will take 2 – 3 days to arrive.
This morning, I noticed the rattling sound was suddenly gone. That felt strange so I checked the filter and realized it was jammed and not running at all. I panicked and tried to fix it but it didn’t work. Since the new filter hasn’t arrived yet I moved the sponge media into another filter that is already running in a different tank (that tank is cycling and has no fish)
From what I understand beneficial bacteria mainly live in the filter media. As long as the sponge stays wet and is in a running filter it should be okay, is that right?
Since then I’ve been feeling like my betta isn’t quite himself. The worst part is I have no idea how long the filter had actually stopped working and I feel really guilty for not noticing sooner, I’m very worried about him. Normally he swims slowly and calmly. Earlier today about 4 hours after changing the filter setup I noticed his mouth opening and closing repeatedly while he was swimming. I’ve never really seen him do this before
Does this sound serious or am I just overthinking? Could this be stress or a water quality issue?
