I recently noticed my fish, Poseidon, flaring for the first time since I got him in June. However, he only flares on one side. I've also noticed a dark red color around his gills on one side. Despite this, he seems perfectly fine and has gotten little spots of color compared to when I first got him.

He’s only half as mad today… but seriously it could be a discomfort caused by finrot or a fungus infection. The fin damage could also just be stress related to a infection, please add more photos of the sides of the betta and any other angles you can get photos of to help us betta see the skin
I had this happen with one of my betta spawns a few years back. One male only flared with half of his beard, but was otherwise healthy. It never bothered him and he lived a long life.
As long as you dont see any other signs of illness or stress I wouldn’t worry too much about it, but continue monitoring.
