This dwarf gourami really surprised me at how intelligent this species can be. To me this is the equivalent of him trying to use tools – or building a nest like a bird. Unfortunately he didn't manage on his own but with my help – and some duckweed in the ring – he has built a great first bubble nest in just a few hours of joining the tank. It was a bit of a gamble as it's a 30g with green neons and pygmy corydora but he is ignoring them completely. I did watch him for a long time in the shop before deciding. He is super healthy and was the calmest in the bunch. If it hadn't worked out I had another tank for him to join but I think this will work. I named him Diego after the sabertooth from ice age because he is a predator that becomes friends with everyone else.

Holy crap! Gourami are my favorites but because of their little feelers, but now also because they they’re smart and also adorable in their nest building habits? My heart melted when I saw you put the ring in there. So sweet and also super cool, I had no clue they were that smart1
I have a honey guarami in a community tank. It figured out that when I add the flakes to feed the fish, that the current from the filter circulates the food and eventually it ends up in the back right corner. While all the other fish scramble for flakes, the guarami goes to the corner and waits for dinner to come to them. Super cool to watch.
