Hello, I am not a betta fish owner, but I have been given one by my mother to take care of for a day as he is a present for my sister.
All I have is the container he was bought in and some flakes. He is going to be traveling to my father's place tomorrow but in the mean time I'm concerned about the well-being of the fish.
First, the container is small and has no hiding places. It's fresh off the shelf basically. Should I improvise a hiding spot or could it live a day without one? If I give it one it will lose what little space it has.
Second, the instructions on the flakes says to give it only what it can eat within three minutes three times daily. I took the smallest pinch but I think I gave it too much, it was way over what it could eat in three minutes, should I use a precise tool like tweezers to put flakes in it's area?
I know that I'm only going to have him for a day but I'm just worried about his welfare because he could have been cramped on the store shelves for a while already.

Use tweezers for the food. They are very easy to overfeed.
Hopefully your mother is also gifting all the supplies to set up a livable tank for this betta, and your sister knows how to cycle an aquarium. If you are able to run out to the store and get some live aquatic plants like Java fern to put in the container that will help. He will have somewhere to rest at least. New life spectrum also makes a nice betta pellet that is like $12-13 which are very tiny and appropriate. Idk what kind of flake you have.
Poor little guy I’ve seen so many being given as gifts this year 😞 ok if you are already a fish person but a lot of these guys end up with no filter, no heater, no plants, colored gravel and a SpongeBob pineapple and die within a few months which is really too bad because they have such personalities
Talk to em, don’t over feed, enjoy cuteness!
Congrats, and please do all the research needed to give him a good life. Ask here if you have any doubts.
It’s important that you learn how to cycle the aquarium, what they like and what they don’t.
Personally, I think the suggested feeding amount is too much. Once per day for one minute, plus one fasting day per week, is more than enough. Their stomach is about the size of their eye.
