Hello all! I have a beautiful half moon dumbo in my 5 gallon tank currently. My tank has been established about two months, with great parameters, a heater, low filter flow, live plants and sand substrate. I checked parameters this morning with API freshwater test kit.) I had to move my betta from my desk at work for the winter holiday. Therefore I had to complete a fairly large water change and kept what water I could from his tank- approximately 2 1/2 gallons of his old water, 2 1/2 gallons of new treated water. I have noticed a slight algae bloom since his move to my house, so I’ve been working on getting that cleaned up a little at a time. He has been placed in a room where I have to keep the door closed because I have murder cats who will kill literally anything that moves. Previously at work, I would provide him stimulation for hours at a time because he would literally swim to me and I would watch and talk to him. He is in a seamless, rimless tank so I had 100% vision of him and him of me. We listened to a lot of Christmas music in these last two months together lol! So anyway, he was constantly stimulated by me and noise around him. Because he has been placed in a room where I don’t spend a lot of time, I think he is bored. I’ve noticed his fins are nipped, and he is often pacing the glass when I enter the room. He is eating and swimming normally, but when I entered this morning, there was a fairly large gash in his large fin in the back. I had submerged the pothos plants I have in order to provide some other stimulation and exploration, but I know long term pothos plants should not be submerged. I will be ordered more live plants and another hammock/floating item to rest in. What else can I provide with my boy, Bodie, for the time being for the next week and a half until I return to work where we can spend our days together. Do shrimp work as a stimulation activity? I don’t mind paying for a few feeder shrimp if it means he will hunt them and stop destroying his fins. Photo for tax!

  1. You can see a visible gash? I’d focus on that before anything else. Bettas thrive in Tannin enriched water so adding Alder Cones or Almond Leaves will help with the fishes happiness and his wounds.
