Just received this pole & reel and I haven’t fished in a decade . I just want to make sure there isn’t no such thing as “too big of a pole” for average perch/trout, etc fishing in the local ponds and canals . Are should I go with a smaller pole? “Action medium-heavy 8-20lb line” Ugly Stik Gx2

  1. It’ll be fine. A medium or medium light might be a little better suited depending on what lives in those waters, but pretty much every rod used for largemouth bass fishing is medium heavy.

I use a medium heavy Ugly Stik for pike fishing. I’m throwing 1 oz spoons.

I think it’s too much for an all around species rod.

I would go medium light if possible. The goat of multi species rods. Light enough for panfish but can handle large pike in a pinch as well.

A medium would be a better choice as well.

Wouldn’t go heavier than 8lb mono. 15-20lb braid would be good with a 8 lb leader if you want to go that route.

    Good luck.
