Okay so before I start, im aware my tank is less then ideal. I plan on getting more plants and hides, and eventually switching over to real plants.
Today I got a few things for my fish (christmas perks), a 5.5 gal tank, a new filter, and new heater.
The filter however, has a hole at the top where water comes out, which is normal obviously, but my betta is VERY curious of it, which I dont like because im worried he might get sucked in, ive been watching him for an hour and fifty minutes now and ive tried multiple things to try and make it less likely?
The filter is a 'top fin betta filter' and it says up to 5 gallons, I noticed it didn't have a sponge so I tried to put an unscented one in there (stupid obviously, I took it out) because I dont know how else to prevent him from getting stuck other then removing the filter??
Currently i just have one of the fake plants to cover it, which is fine temporarily I belive, but id prefer not to do that long term 🙁
Im going to try and get a new filter or something when my mom gets paid next week, but I was wondering if anyone had reccomendations or advice? Im also gonna get more hides and plants, maybe some driftwood if thats what its called?
I've had this fish for about a year or less now, but it only recently started being mine, it used to be my mother's until she decided I could have it.
I also would like advice on if there's any plants or hides I should avoid? I've been touching every plant i find to make sure they're not sharp, 🥲
Also ignore the random plastic, thats just there because I was using it while acclimating 💔 last photo is currently how im handing the filter issue

Real plants are best but soft silk plants will do. Hard plastic can hurt their fins. I’m sure someone will post the basic beta graphic of care soon. Lol
if the water is coming out of the hole at the top he most likely wont get sucked in, they arent very strong swimmers so he wont be able to push through that strong current unless hes been training for 30 years lol
I would say to maybe try and get a couple of live plants or silk. For live plants I’ve found that they can be a bit sensitive sometimes but I’ve had a lot of luck with anubias plants if you want to try them out. Plastic or fake plants can hurt your bettas fins, my betta got injured because of one so I ended up taking it out 🙁 Wood is a great addition to the tank and it adds tannins which can help your betta fish so I would say to definitely add that in the tank. As for the filter maybe try and get a sponge filter, I personally don’t own one but I’ve heard a lot of good things about them 🙂
