i recently got this aquarium for a really good deal and was wondering what type of fish would be comfortable in a five gallon tank that’s taller than wide. i already have a shrimp tank and nerites and mysteries in my other tanks so i was hoping for something different than those. my LFS has a nice selection of nano species i was thinking about researching to see who would best enjoy it.

  1. i will get downvotes again and people will say otherwise but: NO

many people will say a betta. but 5g is the bare minumum tank for a betta. with deco and such its to small IMO

make a good looking shrimp/snail tank.

dont be happy with providing the bare minimum for an animal.

on top of that its harder to keep parameters heatly in a small tank.

ps: most “nano” fish are schooling fish. so you need more than one = bigger tank.

  2. Definitely no nano schooling fish, horizontal space is required for those species.

I honestly would not even do a betta, or any fish.

This would make another great shrimp tank. You could check out r/opaeula

One of the worst aquarium footprints to exist in my opinion. You’ve got 4 gallons of swim space, but it’s tall and narrow. 1 gallon for the filtration in the back. Just about nothing goes well in them. Maybe try some shrimp or snails.

  4. Because it’s tall and not horizontal I wouldn’t do fish in here.

I would use it to try my hand at a really nice planted tank. Like try something scape wise I haven’t done before. It’s small so it wouldn’t be expensive to really go for it and get creative.

If you’re only interested in animals, I think shrimp are the only thing I would do in here. You could try microcrabs as well, but those things are tiny. Maybe try a shrimp you haven’t had before. Like if you have neos try doing a low pH tank with caridina?

  5. Whats the filter situation in the back? This could make a really handsome pico reef. With enough rock space, you could have a tiny goby like an Eviota or Trimma
