Hello – I’m looking for feedback on stocking my 90 B UNS 12 gallon tank. It is a bit of an odd shape, being somewhat long and short. But it fits this spot in my office well and it’s just below the window line which should keep the sunlight off of it.

This is my second tank. My first tank is also a 12 gallon. I jumped into it without having much of a plan – which is OK. I think it turned out great. But I want to be more intentional this time. My other tank is a densely planted, high tannin tank with sparkling gouramis, and gold ring danios.

For this tank, I want to work backwards from the fish before making too many decisions about the substrate, the plants, and the overall set up.

Here are some ideas I’ve been kicking around and potential reasons they are good or bad:

1 – Blue Rams, tank too small?
2 – Multis, too small?
3 – clown killis, need a lid (which may be fine)
4 – Blue eyed rainbow (Gertrude) – leaning this way… but also need a lid
5 – two small nano schools: Pygmy cories + tetra/rasbora
6 – small nano school + shrimp!
7 – Pygmy cories + a centerpiece fish like Pygmy Goirami
8 – Apisto(s) ?
9 – Trio of fancy killis
10 – rabbit snails + nano school

My latest thinking is 4 or 7. Although maybe it’s too small for a dwarf gourami?

Fish aside, I was leaning toward a sandy substrate with more open swimming area than my other tank.

Thoughts? Feedback? Flames? Thank you!

I have about 15 micro rasboras in a long 10G with yellow shrimp and a few snails. The rasboras love it! They’ve been in a couple different tanks as community fish, but the 10 is their first solo tank. They are super happy and more active and social than I’ve seen them before. It’s officially their tank now.

  2. As far as dwarf cichilds go it really depends more on the footprint of the aquarium than the volume.

With how long the aquarium looks I think a pair of rams or a small apistogramma like borellii would be fine.

I have bred apistogramma macmaster in a 12gal cube, with waste being easily manageable and no aggression between the pair.
