I would really appreciate some help identifying some of these rods/reels and their practical uses. Been fishing all my life but never really gave fly fishing a run. Would any of these be a decent start? I live in southern Appalachia so I’m thinking the 8’ rod would give me my best shot in brushy rivers/creeks but I have no idea. Thanks!

The 11wt would either be good for big salt game or a musky (definitely none in your area). The 5wt would be the choice for your area.

  2. You have three nice rods. All are Fenwick fiberglass rods from the 1970s or early 1980s. They are some of the last glass rods made before everyone switched to graphite for 40 years. Glass rods are making a comeback and your rods are both fishable and collectible. You have an ultlight spinning rod, a nice 5 weight trout rod, and an 11 weight tarpon/musky rod. Fenwick seemd to resist the switch to graphite for some time and there was an old saying that good glass was better than poor graphite. This was a real issue at the time, but the smoothness and durability of glass has ultimately prevailed. The Pfleuger reel is also a classic and will match well with the five weight, although modern reels are much lighter with stronger drags. BUT, you will get nice compliments on the stream for your classic good taste. See ebay for collectible values but I would fish them. I have one Fenwick from that era and still use it.
