My 6 year old was gifted this betta for Christmas. We are slowly learning what’s right and what’s wrong. We got rid of the neon gravel and bought Aqua Natural Biosubstrate. We are working on heavily planting the tank. We have been on the hunt for a natural cave for him. We bought the Freshwater Master Test Kit and we are keeping an eye on water parameters and doing 50% changes as needed. Here’s to praying our sweet little Slush grows big and flourishes in his tank. We can’t wait to add him some shrimpy friends.
If you could, please give me the best food recommendations for Slush! We want him to grow appropriately and for his pretty colors to shine bright.

Wow great job, specially for someone that was caught by surprise!
This link helped me a lot with cycling: https://www.reddit.com/r/AquariumCycling/s/j1NpOQrSVr
I highly recommend Fritz 700 (my 12 gallon tank was cycled in 3 days) – https://fritzaquatics.com/products/fritzzyme-turbostart-700-freshwater
Answering your question:
I feed my lil guy with Northfin in the morning and Betta Bug Bites in the evening – I give him 4 to 5 pellets each time. Once a week I give him approx 2cm of frozen blood worms (thawed of course) instead of a pellet meal. I also fast him once a week from time to time but not necessarily every week. I have a plakat in a 12G tank though so he’s very active. I would say start on the small portion size and adjust if necessary, try to pay attention to his belly, it shows fast if you’re overdoing it – good luck!
Fluval bug bites for bettas is great! I also feed frozen bloodworms that I thaw in a bit of aquarium water. It’s super fun to feed those with tongs (or with my fingers tbh) and they’re a nice treat for the fish.
I’m glad that you’re planting! Make sure to have actual plant light and not just the light that comes with the aquarium itself as the plants will die (ask me how I know…). I think that a big amazon sword would look great on the tank and betta will sometimes use the leaves as a resting spot which is super cute
I have the exact same fish hide in my tank. Take it out and remove the plastic fake plants and then put it back in the tank. Anything plastic/sharp will cut the fins of the betta. It happened to me and it took me so long to figure out why I would wake up and his tail was getting smaller and smaller 😩
