My white elephant gift was a betta in a Tito’s bottle (don’t get me started). But luckily I’ve been wanting to start an aquarium for a while now so this gave me an excuse to. Anyway this is what he started in to what I made for him. This is my first tank so open to tips or suggestions. It’s 10 gallons with a heater and filter. The plants are real also.
I’m also thinking once it’s more established about if it’s possible to get him some tank mates I know betta can be temperamental so let me know your thoughts.

My question is how the fuck were you changing the water from the first ‘tank’

Nice upgrade! I’m looking to re-establish one of my bigger tanks (covid messed with my ability to buy good water… I have overly hard water… so my tanks died out slowly and haven’t been restarted.). I’d like to have a heavily planted tank for my betta and am also considering friends for him.
I think it would be more precise to say “White elephant bettas first tank” 🙂
It looks amazing, plants will grow too! Try to get some salvinia minima if you can!
Beautiful tank!! Does the lid have a light or is it separate?
This looks amazing! The little guy is very lucky to have come into your hands.
Since the light and lid are attached, I would look into the light’s spectrum and consider upgrading to a planted tank full-spectrum light. Plants need different wavelengths of light which most integrated lid sets do not provide.
As for tankmates, my betta lives in a ten gallon with shrimp and nerite snails. I would steer clear of mystery’s as their bioload tends to be very high for such a small tank.
For shrimp, watch your bettas temperament and consider getting a variety of colors in the initial introduction. Mine only kills shrimp that aren’t yellow, for some reason. Your plants will grow, but adding lots of large, full plants will give those shrimp more places to hide and thrive away from the predator’s gaze. I recommend ludwigia (rooted) and water lettuce (floating).
