Wanting to switch from plastic plants to real. My current group of fishy friends loves to rearrange the for me. I have no experience with real plants, what equipment or substrate is needed. I am leaning towards smaller size fish such as tetras, barbs, loaches, small catfish and maybe add some shrimp or a lobster, thanks for any input. My current setup is 120 gallon with mainly convicts and a large Oscar, also a chubby spotted Raphael catfish.

With convicts, an Oscar, and a Raphael catfish, rooted plants won’t survive as they’ll get dug up constantly. Your best bet is epiphyte plants like Anubias, Java fern, or Bolbitis attached to wood or rock. Floating plants can also work if the Oscar doesn’t shred them. No special substrate or CO₂ needed. Shrimp, crayfish, or small fish won’t be compatible with that stock.

As much as I love the swap to live plants any day, I do need to tel you that you shouldn’t expect it to last, cichlids are very rowdy and have a tendency to do their own aquascaping, so it’s very possible that those plants are going to be uprooted and eventually die

If they play nice then they could maybe live, but don’t bet on it
