Im not sure what to call this but my betta kind a pushes his gills our he does this rarely but ts looks worrying

    This is called flaring – they normally do it kinda like a cat puffs its fur. It’s healthy for them to do it sometimes and it stimulating.

    If he’s we’ve doing it all the time, he’s probably stressed

  2. When a male sees another male they flare (aka pushing his gills out) they do it to appear bigger and be more intimidating. His doing it to his own reflection in the glass my Betta does the same thing.

    It’s perfectly normal. Male bettas flare like that when they are challenging another male. In this case, it looks like he is doing it to his own reflection. It can stress them out if it happens often or for an extended period of time, so if you notice that, you will probably want to try to take the source of stimulation away if you can.
