I’ve never owned fish before and as the title says i was given this betta for christmas with no prep. Ive got him in a 10 gallon tank right now and would appreciate any tips or comments about my set up. I will definitely be putting in more plants and plan to add shrimp (from what ive read either amano or cherry) and probably a zebra snail or 2.

Obligatory betta pic
I just bought those same side stick things for ammonia and ph, someone told me they do not do anything for my kind of tank. Don’t know if it refers to yours as wekk
Your doing better than most.
You’ll need to research the nitrogen cycle and fish in cycling.
I’d get your self a liquid ammonia test, those seachem ones are very hit it miss and take over 4 hours to change. Strips are better than nothing if it’s all you got.
You will also need to test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate
The java ferns will die planted it likes its rihzome exposed, it does better with rihzome and roots in the water column, tie it with fishing line or pure super glue it to a driftwood, large rocks or decor peices.
The rotalia is higher light plants and should be seperated more, all bunched together won’t let enough light down to the roots.
Ammano are wild caught fyi and cherrys may be a snack but you can try it, nerites really don’t do great with bettas as water parameters are diffrent. You could try ramshorn but they do breed in the tank
