My 20-year-old Shimano bag has been through a lot, and is literally coming apart at the seams. Kicking off the new year by transferring everything (and then some) to the new bag.

  1. I got a new kastking bag that holds for 3,700 series trays. Unfortunately it doesn’t have a space for any quantity of soft plastics. So I just carry three trays and then end up filling the rest of the soft plastics. I think I need to get one of the binders that holds soft baits.  I’m going to look for one that has two compartments vertically, otherwise everything just clumps at the bottom, which doesn’t work at all for a backpack.

If you run out of room and want to make it extra heavy you can fit 3 of the Plano thin trays for every 2 trays you remove so you can go from 6 regular trays to 9 of the thin trays. Plano also has these pouches that are great for soft plastics that are sized as 3600 and 3700 trays so you can easily squeeze one between trays or use a few and replace a tray.

I had (still have) that Evolution Outdoor bag. I downsized last year to a KastKing Baitspace. Still pretty heavy for long walks but that Evolution kicked my ass after a mile or so. I can’t resist filling a bag to the brim

  4. I’ve done a pretty good job minimizing my setup and separating tackle into situation-based boxes to minimize weight when on foot vs in the kayak vs the boat. Kinda fun to organize things that way and it really pays off. Summer is on, grab the summer box, fish aren’t deep or likely to be deep, leave the more Deepwater specialized box at home.

Then I just keep a core group of tackle that can work in most situations, I just will have reduced selection vs the dedicated box

My resolution for 2026 is to bring only one small box of a few lures for every outing. When I bring the kitchen sink I spend too much time dithering.

  6. Wow that Shimano matches mine almost exactly and it was great for 20 years too. I just upgraded myself.
