Hello!

I started cycling this 40gal tank with the Dwarf Hairgrass about 4 months ago. A month later, after confirming the water parameters were good, I introduced a Golden Chinese Algae Eater.
Last week I introduced 5x Zebra Danios, and I have 3 Black Mollys in QT rn

To be entirely honest I kinda went into this blind, I kinda js googled how to cycle a tank, how introduce new fish into an existing tank, and good tankmates for the CAE.

So anyways…

  • How many critters can I have in here? It's 40gal and I currenly have 1x CAE, 5x Danios, and I'm preparing to introduce 3x Mollys
  • Is the amount of hardscape acceptable? Should I have better hiding spots? Whats the best way to go about "furnishing" the upper part of the tank?
  • Is it normal for the hairgrass to take this long to grow? the substrate is Aqua-Flora and ts has been in there for 4 mo, I thought I'd at least have a solid patch of grass by now.
  • What are my options for aquarium lights for a hexagonal tank?
  • Is it normal/okay for my substrate to be this dirty? Can I get some kinda critter to help with this? will the CAE scrap with it if there is such a critter?

Thanks for reading 😋

  1. the tank size is 40 gallon / 150 liter ? it looks way smaller than that. I would check that again and reassess your stocking. honestly the tank looks a bit sad like this with only the grass, not sure if the species you have require hiding spaces, would also read up on this.

substrate doesnt look dirty to me, might be a bit shallow for roots to develop properly. for a different look you could add a layer of bright sand.

  2. I would never recommend starting this hobby with hairgrass it is one of the most annoying plants. Be ready for browning new life slow growth and sudden takeovers
