hello! my mom recently got herself a betta fish. i know nothing about fish i prefer reptiles but i know her tank is too small and its round. i've been telling her there's 5 gallon tanks on facebook market for less than $50 but she says she likes how the one she has looks. the photo is the one that she currently has. i've been doing so much research because she won't and i send her new information i find but she's so stubborn about it idk what to do. the betta doesn't seem stressed but it doesn't look like he's living the best life he can live. is there any 5 gallon tanks that look "aesthetic" just so i can get her to upgradešŸ˜–

  1. There are 5gal rimless tanks, that when planted are gorgeous! I cant post pics in comments…. but for some inspiration, check out my post in r/aquariums called “rate my tank!” Its a 30gal, but the same concept can apply.Ā

For cheap supplies that look amazing, get coal slag blasting sand. I got the Black Diamond brand, 50lb bag since my tank was so big..  but I think they make smaller bags of it. Then go to your lfs, and a few plants should be cheap enough. Also check Amazon for some deals. For equipment, they NEED a filter and a heater. The heater needs to be about 78⁰F, and the filter have slow flow so the bettas fins dont get damaged.

The basics for betta care are: 5gal minimum tank (10gal is a lot easier to keep up, and looks a lot better too! Its also better for keeping the fish happy), slow flowing filter, heater set for 78⁰F, no rough decor (live or silk plants are OK. Live is always better though), and sand is much healthier for the fish, and looks better than gravel too!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!Ā

  2. Does she want that one because of how it looks or because it’s aestheticly pleasing

also an aquarium will need a heater, something to check the temp, a filter and some form of co2 like air pump or airstones,

she needs to lern about the nitrite cycle, before she gets the fish which can be speed up with benifical bacteria, she will need a way to get rid of clorine and chloramine (I recomend prime seachem, beacuse it removes chlorine and chlormine and detoxes ammonia and nitites (don’t confuse for nitrates like I did)) ammonia and nitrites are deadly for fish (you’ll learn about it in the nitrite cycle) and her tank will be uncycled as any new aquarium is, also if she already bought the fish and can’t return it she will have to do a fish in cycle

so in the end it won’t be cheap either way for my first aquarium (a lot bigger) everything costed around maybe 850 usd (maybe 800 if not counting fish)

where’s the person that can really beautifully and simply explain that 3 gallons is actually more work to maintain because it’s smaller which changes the nitrogen cycles and increases how frequently it needs to be changed from monthly to weekly
