Based on what I have in my tank—Anubias and other various flora I can’t remember the names of, spider wood, tank at 75 degrees, hard water (consistently at this ph for weeks though), a bunch of ramshell snails (which won’t stop pro creating), and three swordtails, recycled net pot from an old plant, I was wondering if I should keep doing what I’m doing or do I need anything fixed? Second image is my most recent master test from today.

  1. That high ph.. my first thought was African cichlids? lol. Live bearers do well in that water if memory serves. Only suggestion is to make sure you have one male for every 3 females. Again, if memory serves.

  2. Do u have a water softener at home? I have hard water too. I do 50/50 hard and soft tap water to reduce hardness. I let it sit.in my basement to gas off. I used to do that Master kit u have and got rid of them 3 yrs ago.

Buy hardy fish like swordtails.and mollies.and keep for a number of years. Basic beginner fish. You say you’re a beginner. Stay with your setup for a year or two. Refrain from breeding the swordtails. I know it’s gonna be boring looking at the same fish. Point is you’re learning to establish a tank and not kill them. Breeding can come later.

I used to have a bunch of chemicals to adjust my water. It drove me crazy. Now I just do aquarium salt and Seachem Neutral. That’s it. I stopped doing this regular testing with this API kits.

I have a deep substrate tank and plants. Water is topped off only when it gets an inch below the black band. Water changes are done twice a year. 3X at the most.
