Hi everyone! My son (3), got a betta fish from Santa for Christmas, and he named him Cheddar. He was, obviously, in poor shape. He now has an awesome tank with a heater, bubbler, and filter with live plants and hiding places. He’s also in pre-conditioned water. We are feeding him betta pellets and blood worms twice a day. He was touch and go for about a week while I treated him for ich, but now he’s really active and eating well.

My question is, how long will it take him to get his color back? The second picture is from a couple of days ago. We’ve had him for about 2.5 weeks now.

Also, what advice do y’all have? Is there anything I’m not doing that I need to do. I’ll put more picture of his tank set up in the comments.

  1. Bloodworms can cause bloat as I understand, and should ideally be a treat rather than a regular part of their diet- like once a week

It’s a learning curve, fish ownership. You’re on track to doing well if you follow everyone’s recommendations here!

  3. Bubbler can go, bettas don’t need one, it also creates unnecessary flow within the tank that long fins can’t handle.

Feeding should ONLY be done once every 2-3 days. The size of those pellets would suggest the betta needs only one of them per feed. If you feed blood worms he only requires 2-3 per feed, but not in combination with any other food.

Instead of pre conditioned go with tap water conditioner prime.

    Edit:
The tank is also way too small, 5.5gal minimum. Length over height.

Light should be buffered by floating plants, yours is blinding bright for a betta.
