Betta Fish: First time having fish since I was 8, how’d I do?
a 5 gal tank for an assorted koi male betta, first shot at plants too, I plan on adding an amano shrimp later on once i get more money, any suggestions on what i can add or improve?

Looks awesome! I think those are Amazon sword and java fern. Amazon sword is root feeding, get some root fertilizer tabs and put it in the sand for those. Java fern feeds from the water column. Instead of planting it in the sand can glue it or tie with fish line to ornaments. Liquid fertilizer for those.
Have you cycled the tank? Usually in a cycled tank the water is crystal clear instead of cloudy. Though it could be something else.
Depending on the ph in your tank, you want the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels below the ppm in the chart below ([aquariumscience.org](https://aquariumscience.org)). Testing for the ppm using the API master kit.
