After doing research and being excited to bring home just ONE betta, my in laws took my daughter to the pet store and she ended up coming home with 5 fish. Extremely frustrating as I don’t even know what kinds of fish they are and I don’t want to half ass my care for these fish (hence why I was researching for a betta beforehand) anyway, these were not advertised as bettas at the store (tbh I don’t know what they were calling them at the store) but I am worried these are female bettas. Yes, very frustrating and now what I planned for but I’m here now to figure out if these are in fact female bettas because then I need to go buy another tank and get it set up for them to live separately. I know they weren’t sold in the little cups as is traditional with most bettas ( at least that’s how it is at all the pet shops near me). Let me know what you guys think. I really want to get these fish in the right set up as soon as possible and I’m feeling so guilty about not knowing if these are bettas or not. I was thinking potentially females but I have no clue!! Also – there aren’t 5 of these in the tank. There are two of them and some other fish that I’m still working on determining what kind they are. Do not worry, they will be separated and cared for properly I just need some guidance on determining what these are!

  1. Yes, they definitely look like female bettas. It’s recommended to have 20 liters per female in an aquarium, as females can indeed live together if there’s enough space. And by the way, although the world of aquarium plants might seem intimidating, it’s actually very simple, especially with beans, which you just attach to the rocks. They greatly benefit the fish. I recommend you try adding some vegetation.

Hold on… do you know what cycling is? Did you cycle your tank? By the air bubbles on the glass it looks like you JUST set up the tank!

2nd one looks like betta, 1st one am not sure but also probably betta.

Please do the right thing and keep ONLY 1!!! For 5 bettas you will need 5 tanks (do NOT attempt a sorority please)!!!

  3. My blue one looks identical to yours. It was alongside the bettas in the store but was advertised as a “female other” with no other information. I’ve had it a while now and it doesn’t look like my mom’s 2 year old betta — no flowing tail or betta markers. I have no real idea what it specifically is, either, but it’s kept alone in a tank with no others and I give it the same food my mom gives her betta plus some dried bloodworms. It’s been doing well and I’ve had it 8 months now. I added another (in another tank for itself) that also resembles your pink one and I’m doing the same. Again, it was described as “female” and nothing more. So far they seem to grow very slowly, my mom’s betta got big fast and these don’t. I would treat them as a betta tbh even if you don’t know the specific type.

They are 100% female bettas probably sold from a betta sorority.

Also blue one looks unhealthy and swollen insides. Swim bladder?

I do see another type of fish at the bottom of the 4th picture. That *might* be a tiger barb tetra? Its definitely not a betta fish and they have completely different care requirements
