So I've been using AI as my sparring partner for buying tackle for a while now. I work in tech, and while ChatGPT is pretty good, Google's AI model Gemini 3 has been the best at finding specific items in online shops.

For example, for specific bonefish flies, it both suggested the classic patterns, found the online shops that ship to my country, and sent me the link to the product on the shop page. Pretty cool stuff.

Now the only thing that I'm still missing is the bonefish, but that's another story.

I was also hunting for a new allround flyrod for nymphing and dry fly. My trusted guide suggested the LPX Tactical series from Guideline, which is super lightweight but also comes at a premium price tag.

And then I found out Guideline basically never discounts their premium rods. Even during Black Friday, at least not in Europe from what I've seen, after checking manually for a good amount of time.

So I set up an AI agent (as seen in the picture) that checks every morning if this rod in the specific 9' #5 class I wanted goes on sale anywhere online, with shipping to Sweden.

For a month, nothing happened.

Then it emailed me with a 25% off deal at a small shop in Brittany, France. I couldn't even find the deal on Google without typing in the actual shop name, but somehow this AI agent found it.

I'll be pairing the rod with the now discontinued Guideline Halo reel series, which you can get for super cheap currently, and their Presentation+ line.

Anyone using the LPX Tactical rod, and or has done shopping with AI yet?

Tight lines

  1. Sounds like a great use case for AI. Glad you found the rod you wanted at a discounted price!

Seems like a useful tool but It would probably make me buy a bunch of fly fishing gear I want but probably shouldn’t be spending money on. Hah!
