Petco was having a sale 50% all glass tanks and Ink’s current tank has been a struggle to keep with everything in there dying. Since I got this bad boy for $30 I figured I’d start right from scratch. Still researching on a good substrate as some are messier than others. But as a 20 gal there’s plenty of decorative and stocking opportunity. Ideas will be appreciated

Get nutrient rich gravel, sand or soil! Lots of live plants! Basically make it look like a jungle! If you have a male, it will depend if he is comfortable having company or not. But with this size you should have room to put a few small schooling fish like tetras and some shrimp with little problems, as long as you have plenty of plants for hiding and cutting lines of site

  2. I used pool filter sand for substrate, purchased from Ace Hardware. Just rinse it well first outside in a bucket. If you prefer black you can get black diamond blasting sand, also from places like Ace. Even well rinsed, both of those make the water cloudy initially and need a good 24 hours to settle. But very cheap compared to substrate made specifically for aquariums!
