My father-in-law is convinced this betta setup is perfectly fine!
I’ve tried explaining basic betta care and have shared a care sheets directly from Reddit, but he insists there’s no issue and that I don’t know what I’m talking about because I kept bettas in bowls years ago.
I’ve since learned better and updated my standards. He hasn’t.
So! I’m handing it over to Reddit. Thoughts?
I told him his ass needs a good old fashioned Reddit roast.

Obviously too small but I have seen a lot worse.
It’s a cool set up for a single betta
Its not the worst, If he’s an experianced fish keeper and is testing his water parameters very regularly as in weekly or more it might be okay. It’s not ideal as the min size is 5gal and smaller tanks of water go bad faster meaning he must be testing the water regularly for this to be a viable set up.( test for ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrates) even with 20 years experience behind me I don’t find set ups under 10gallons easy in a sense, they are finicky.
The biggest issues I see right now are no heater? And the rocks….. The gravel is huge meaning waste and food will get trapped in all the holes and pollute the small volume of water much faster. Those rocks will make cleaning and keeping good water quality a nightmare.
way too bright
If he didn’t listen to you and cant comprehend doing an extremely simple google search that would take about a minute of his life? It’s because he doesn’t care. I’m not sure what to say, he sounds like the exact people I try to avoid in life. Shown literal facts and ignores it to push their own stupidity. Look the fish will live, the tank doesn’t look filthy…he must be at least changing the hopefully treated water. Does this dude need me to send him $20 to buy a mini heater? Can’t you simply say “let me get you another plant or two and a mini digital heater from Amazon and we can see if the fish gets more active and looking better.” Ask him if 2+2 is 4 or does he ignore that simple solution too.
Although I do care about all life on this planet, big and small.. the bigger issue here (imo) is a fully grown man ignoring his son in law over something so simple and easily changed. Dude doesn’t need to buy a luxury couch for the fish. With very little $ can change the quality of life drastically.
Ps-I hope he gets explosive diarrhea on his way to the dumbass convention tomorrow.
Too small for a betta. Unless this is a 5 gallon but I don’t think it is. Round tanks are also bad because it distorts their vision and can make them stressed if they’re constantly catching their reflection. This is why cups are also horrible. Heater and filter required. Definitely more plants.
It’s just small, and bright. I’m sad that he’s unable to understand the fishes needs of you can tell that work was already put into it.
I mean, why would he listen to Reddit roasting. This setup is so much better than what most commercially sold bettas will ever see.
Do you want to butt heads with your father in law?
Grow up, dork.
Maybe it’s about something more than the Betta. In-law relationships can be prickly sometimes.
