I’ve only done it a few times in similar lakes and set up VERY shallow just at the edge of shore. Couldn’t believe they came up and fed that shallow but it didn’t take long to catch them. Not like normal fish either, they dart onto the fish finder so fast I was hardly ready for the strike. See something dart in on the screen and bam fish on. Tip ups shallow to

  2. Hawk lake in Oneida county WI? I’ve fished it through the ice a couple times, more on open water. I’ve seen the trout mostly suspended in the water column. Also I’m only aware of stocked rainbow trout and the native panfish and largemouth bass.

  3. I would do 5′ or less as long as it’s not too weedy. Even 2′ is fine. Trout generally patrol the shallows all day. You camp on one spot and they will come.

  4. I have best luck in about 10 feet or less of water, usually suspend the bait about 1-3 feet from bottom.

  5. Stocked trout are about as easy to find and catch as a bluegill. It’s tough to mess it up.
