Came home a few days ago to this betta on my doorstep. In a tiny cup, in temps of 42°f. Checked my cams and it was some random person that I'm not sure who they were. (I live in a very tiny town where every one in the area knows everyone)
A betta breeder friend was going to pick it up but when she stopped by she said she didn't need any more females and she had no clue what this betta was.
I have some 10gals cycling for baby axolotls but right now I put them in a 3.5 gal that I had in hand with some black water that I was getting ready to make a nano shrimp tank.
I'm honestly really scared to have them because I have the worst luck with bettas but hey are so beautiful.

What would you do in this case? What filters would you use, sub, plants, etc. I would put them in my planted tank, but every fish that goes in is to never be seen again. So I'm starting fresh.
The cup said Male double tail Halfmoon. I don't know enough about bettas but this looks like a female to me and the breeder friend said female with out really looking at them.

They are eating, and love their leaves I have set up for a sleeping spot. They are already looking 100% better than what they looked like in the cup.
Sorry for all the ranting and questions. I just want this beautiful fish to thrive.

Thanks.

It had to be someone who knows you have fish because no one would just randomly dump their fish with someone so the question is why? She looks healthy and looks like a “she” to me but I’m new to bettas. They like low flow so consider a sponge filter or a filter with a baffle

This is definitely not a double tail male imo. It looks like a female to me and actually looks a ton like my betta Tamago! I actually still don’t know what to call this coloration but she’s a short finned female of some sort. She’s a bit yellower than your fish, but she’s begun showing these beautiful iridescent blue and yellow scales since I’ve had her. I’ve had my girl for a few months now in a planted ten gallon with amano shrimps and she’s been doing beautifully. I know she looks a bit red in this photo but it’s because she’s just so transparent. I can literally see her tiny brain when I look down at the front of her head. I can see her swim bladder and stomach as well which helps me tell when she needs to be cut off from bug bites. I’m so glad this little fella ended up with someone who has tanks going and knows the hobby! I wonder if you have a reputation as the aquatic pet person and someone knew you’d be able to take care of a fish they couldn’t. I’m sorry I don’t have more advice for you, but I will say I have a sponge filter that works perfectly for a betta tank as it’s quite low flow.
