Does anyone have any tips on cleaning a skin mount? Wife inherited her dad’s walleye mount but it was hung too close to the kitchen and is covered with grease and dirt. Before I get at this thing with simple green or dawn, is there a better or safer way?

  1. Trophyklean or diluted Dawn dish soap. Apply to a soft cloth first and then take your time and clean. May take multiple sessions.

I’d honestly take it to a taxidermist if you want to preserve it. Old skin mounts can be very delicate, and using cleaning chemicals may damage it.

Diluted Dawn is the gentlest way, but it depends how old it is. My grandfather’s old skin mount was maybe the most fragile thing I’ve ever seen.

Turns out after 30-50 years out of water fish skin turns brittle on like a molecular level.
