I am a somewhat newer fisherman and I was gifted a box of fishing gear from my grandpa. Does anyone know what this chain thing is?

It is a stringer for keeping fish. You open the hook and fish it through the gill and out the mouth so they can stay in the water, while the hook at the upper end clips inside the boat. I don’t like these stringers usually

It is a stringer.
If you’re wade fishing, you clip it to your belt and keep the fish on it.
Used one for stocked trout years ago. You could only keep 7 a day, so we’d string them in order from largest to smallest, and if the one we just caught was bigger than the smallest one, we’d toss the smallest back and replace it.

Chain stringer. Very useful, especially with Pike gar and other toothy fish
