Hi guys, so I’m very new to fishing and I noticed when I cast the line is loose. Am I supposed to be using weights to make the line tighter for better casting? I just have a bobber and hook and use worms. No weights, but I’m not sure if that’s the issue.

tie on a heavy spoon or a heavy weight and cast far a few times and retrieve, that’ll get your line tight on your spool
Yes you need some weight unless you use closed reel or bait caster
Sounds like maybe you weren’t providing consistent tension when initially putting new line on your reel. Never fear, cast out and drop as much line as possible then just like putting new line on, hold the line against the pole as you’re retrieving. Luckily it’s braid so it won’t be popping off the real. You can also do this on land by casting, walking away as much as possible with the bale opened, and then retrieving. But only have a weight on doing that, no hooks.
No; if you’re loosely spooled you’re going to start having loops come off and put tangled knots in your line.
Cast it far with a weight and reel it back on with some tension, or re-spool it with tension.
When you’re casting light, you can raise the tip of your rod to get some tension on a slack line before you reel it in to maintain a tight line. It doesn’t need to drag- just needs to be a tight line.
Please correct me if I’m mistaken, but it sounds like what you’re actually saying is “I don’t have much weight on my line when I cast, and so I can’t cast far with a bobber and hook.”
If that the case then you are correct, you do need a little weight when you cast a bobber. Usually we use a split shot near the hook. [Here’s a page that shows the rig to use](https://www.catfishedge.com/traditional-bobber-rig/) (adjust the split shot weight, line strength and length according to your bait and target species).
There are other ways of presenting your bait: Google “Fishfinder Rig” and “Hi-low Rig”, both of which will use heavier weights and so will let you cast further.

Yes, a basic float (bobber) rig needs weight to help with casting, and more importantly, keep you bait down in the strike zone. This rig is a sliding float (which I generally prefer), but you can do the same thing with a fixed float… I don’t agree with needing the snap on it though; a small barrel swivel is all you need between the main line and leader.
