Very new to fishing, got gifted some “older” but almost unused rods. What can i fish with these size wise- mainly don’t want to break anything. Can’t find any max weight the rods can handle.

  1. It says „casting“ on one rod and „Casting weight“ on the other. This is what you are looking for.

You will not break those rods. What will break them is grossly exceeding the recommended lure weights. If it’s 25gram that essentially ONE ounce, and you could get away with a little heavier so long as you don’t really load and whip that cast, which could snap that rod. In terms of weight fish….you let me know when you get a fish so big it breaks those rods 😎. I have an early spring striped bass rod I use for jigging bucktails in the surf that is 7’6″, and I have beached 25lb stripers with it. You’ll be amazed at how much back one modern fishing rods have.

  3. First off. These are casting rods so don’t put a spinning reel on em. Put a bait caster on em. There’s spinning and casting rods which are different. They look like super old 20 year old rods.

Check if the line guides are broken or chipped (the black circles where the line gets fed through) If they are you will have to replace them which is cheap. If not it’ll keep fraying and snapping your line.

It’s so hard to break a rod fishing normally.

There’s line powers that range from ultralight to extra heavy and even heavier than that. Ultralight basically are for panfish and trout. If you catch a let’s say huge tuna you’ll snap it immediately. These do not look anywhere close to ultralight.

As long as you’re not fishing for the next river monster you won’t break it. Other ways to break it is to pull super hard on the rod with drag set to max on a heavy fish. Best way to not break it is to balance your reel drag with your rod power so that your rod doesn’t do all the work and the reel helps a little. Happy fishing and YouTube your way to this knowledge.

Edit: watch out for doors or anything that opens and closes. I’ve broken plenty of rods going through doors and the rod tip gets closed in it or closing my truck bed on the rod tip. Don’t be like me
