A dead trout placed in a vortex wake swims upstream without muscle movement, and it won the 2024 IG Nobel Physics Prize. The fish’s flexible body resonates with swirling water patterns, passively extracting energy. Live trout use the same trick, reducing muscle effort by ~50%.
I thought this was interesting

That’s actually fascinating.

Dead trout do live trout things.

I wonder if the same is true for any other fish, obviously body structure plays a huge part.

It never ceases to amaze me how trout (and nature overall) are so perfectly adapted to their natural environment and have a brain the size of a pea.
They swim, eat, and mate, that’s about it, so everything about their evolution is 100% for those 3 goals. Their brain only focuses on those things. They have brute forced themselves into the perfect fish.
They found out that being in a vortex wake reduces muscle use millions of years ago and now it’s just what they do.

The dead trout were provided by everyone in this sub who lifted the trout out of water without wetting their hands first

Shouldn’t be getting the IgNobel prize. That’s for stupid, almost obvious stuff. This is very interesting, and possibly new knowledge.

Dead trout don’t eat flies, that explains why I can’t catch any
