Friend is moving and I discovered her betta… IN THIS TANK 🤮🤮 I am taking her but I'm afraid that putting her in a clean tank may shock her… She has been in this tank at least a year without being cleaned.

Hi dont make any sudden changes. You should blackout this tank for daysss to kill algae it only forms with excessive nutrients, waste, food or especially light. So feed lightly…
Is her waters cycled with bacteria? If so it’s likely safe enough but specific algae is harmful you may have to manually remove it gentllllyyyy so it doesn’t spike water
Or simply put this Betta in a new cycled or cycling tank if you can measure ammonia 24/7 till cycled

  2. Alright. First, do not touch the filter. Getting rid of too much in the tank (gravel, decor, etc), may crash the cycle. You can feel free to do water changes, cycling bacteria doesn’t live in the water. Algae is harmless, just unsightly. I personally would leave fish in this tank, do water changes for nitrates, then cycle a new 10 gallon tank for this fish.

I know that I could leave some of the old water in to help…but the whole tank is nasty and with the algae I don’t want it to contaminate a new tank.

To try to kill all the algae you should try to keep lights off for days it’ll die then remove the waste slowly.
But for starting a new tank, I’d get a small sponge filter, a heater, A bottle of bacteria, a bottle of conditioner,
Plants, substrate, Indian almond leaves are medicine… floaters ect

    seachems reccomended for water care!
I wouldn’t move this water to that tank unless you manage to remove all the algae and the water is cycled with balanced perameters using a test kit.

  6. How’s it smell? If it doesn’t smell bad, what you’re looking at is probably a fairly healthy environment for the betta.

Not sure why this post is getting down voted. Also most responses not realizing you are moving her to a new tank. If your new tank is cycled she will be fine. I’d just slowly acclimate her to the new tank water ( drip acclimation).
