Forgive me if I’m being daft. I found this at a thrift store, it seems to be old— it’s very heavy, at least 10lbs and about a foot long. It looks like a lure or a sinker? But have no idea why it would be so large. Thanks!

Probably a 10lb trolling weight for a downrigger, I have some shark shaped weights for just that and they’re 10 lbs…

  2. It’s a downrigger weight. Most people call them cannonballs as traditionally they’re just a sphere with a little fin sticking out. Some designs try to be sleeker than a ball so they run deeper (less blowback) and straighter. I think those fish shape ones are pretty pricey. Great find! Near the Great Lakes by any chance?

BTW the colour does nothing for the fish. Might make it easier to spot in a dark hatch but that’s it.

    Like everyone said, downrigger weight.

Random story: Back in the 90’s, when I was 12, we went to Flaming Gorge on a fishing trip. We were trolling needlefish with downriggers and catching some decent rainbows. My uncle noticed the downrigger weights had big scratches in them that looked like something was attacking them. He started using a big kwikfish lure and we all landed several big lake trout. I’ll never forget that trip.
