After a horrific run in with some mystery long drawn out illness with my Galaxy Rasboras, my tank has been a shrimp tank for months now. I think I’m finally ready for a fish again. I would love a betta, but fear with all my plants (this photo is a bit old, plants have grown a lot since, trimming this weekend) and hardscape there just isn’t enough room for one swim or it would get caught on stuff all the time. I’m wondering if there’s any (preferably solo) small fish that would be happy with a plant dense 7 gallon? The rasboras were so traumatizing after hearing about how hardy they are that I think I just want 1 fish to focus on. I would also be open to something unconventional (verts, would love a frog but too many plants, etc.)

  1. If you’re willing to do live feeding, Pygmy Sunfish, Scarlet Badis, or Black Tiger Badis would be great. Only caveat is that I’ve seen a couple of people say their Scarlet Badis would kill shrimp, even shrimp bigger than them. All of these fish will eat shrimplets so you should probably add more moss hiding places.

A sparkling gourami, scarlet badis, maybe a honey gourami (might be a little too small though), or a solitary peacock gudgeon.
