Opal has been doing so well since my last update, getting a little more lively every day. On Saturdays I feed live black worms to my fish, and I could not wait to let her try one. I started with one worm. She hesitated at first, then suddenly gobbled it right up. Two more followed just as quickly. On her regular days, she eats three pellets, though they are still a bit big for her. She will carry one around in her mouth until it softens enough to eat, which is honestly the sweetest thing to watch. I have some baby betta pellets on the way for her, but the snow has slowed everything down.
During the storm, I took some quiet time to set up a 6 gallon cube just for her, using plants from my other tanks. I swished some goldfish filter media in the water to help the cycle get started, and I am hoping it will be ready in four to six weeks, once she is finished with quarantine. I keep a lot of fish, but I have already grown so attached to her. She has so much personality and is such a silly, special little soul.
Thank you all for your kind words on my last post. I’m hoping things are only looking up for her.

Sounds great! She found a good home with you.
So good to read about what she likes to eat. It differs with each individual betta.
Small tip: you talk about how she eats her pellets. My betta Cookie eats Hikari sticks (among other things). He absolutely loves those. Even though Cookie is a lot bigger than Opal and can easily fit these sticks in his mouth, I do soak the sticks in a bit of tank water before I give them. It’s easier for him to eat them this way.
I’d suggest soaking those pellets you feed Opal before you give them. That way there’s less of a chance of her suffocating by accident. You can use a pipette to suck them up and drop them in the water in front of her.
Keep on doing the good work! Opal must be really happy with you 🙂
