Hi, ive fished only live and cut bait up to this point and im looking to get into using lures. I’m fishing central Florida, mostly Daytona beach and ponce inlet. What lures and colors can I use for general saltwater fishing to get bites from anything in the water. Also any specific lures for big fish would be appreciated. (Pic for attention. Not my lures)

  1. White colored soft swimbait. Either on a jighead or a weighted swimbait ewg hook.

Edit: I misread your locations. YMMV

  2. The bucktail jig is arguably the most universal lure in fishing because it combines simplicity with unmatched adaptability across species, environments, and techniques. At its core, it’s nothing more than a weight, natural hair, and a hook—yet maybe its that minimalism that allows it to imitate a wide range of bait in both saltwater and freshwater. As someone I know once put it “It’s nothing, but looks like something to every fish out there”.

You can fish a bucktail effectively at any depth, any current, from shore or boat, and in clear tropical flats to cold, turbid estuaries. By changing the jig weight, hair length, color, and retrieve speed, the same lure can target fluke on sandy bottoms, striped bass in tidal rips, snapper on reefs, or even freshwater predators like walleye and bass. Unlike many modern lures that rely on built-in action, the bucktail’s effectiveness is driven by the angler. There’s a reason why the US Navy survival kit used to include a bucktail jig.

Give me bucktails in a couple of sizes and I’m confident that I can catch a fish anywhere.
