I really don’t know if I’m allowed to post stuff like this but I seen the "discussion” tag so i thought maybe I could. I’m very infuriated with this girl. This girl and 2 other people from my school have skipped school and stolen bettas many times. 2 times I have taken the bettas from them and have kept them (I still have them) but this time I wasn’t able to do so as they took it this weekend and in my head i initially thought it was within good intent even though it still stealing and very messed up. But now it’s just needs to stop somehow there not getting caught and this girl is just going to leave the betta to die in the cup with no food or nothing she’s just ganna keep it in the cup….. petsmart/petco I guess have no wealthy idea that this is happening and it’s so BEYONDDD f’ed. I don’t really know what to do and don’t know what I can do. What these kids (I’m a senior these are freshman) are failing to get through there heads is that it’s not just a fing fish. It’s a living thing and ppl are so used to such fish care/set ups that these kids just think they can thrive in a bowl of tap water and nothing else. I literally don’t know what to do, I know it’s not up to me to do anything but as a very passionate fish keeper and animal person this is so messed up. Do you guys think getting cops involved is dumb? Or like letting the school know? Or calling the petsmart/petco’s in the area? I just want to hear yalls opinions on what you guys think I should do. I really don’t know if this is allowed so I don’t want to get my posting privileges taken so I’ll delete it if not… but I’m soooooooo p!ssed.

  1. One option is going to the store and telling the managers. At the place I work at, we full on ban people for things like this. Can get trespassed if they show up. You have proof and know who they are

There is no difference between a living thing and something we eat.

There is, however, a HUGE difference between eating something living because you’re hungry and torturing something living because you’re bored.

Torturing animals is a common behavior among children who grow up to be murderers.

Talk to an adult who can watch these kids over the next few years. This is concerning behavior.

Funny thing is I am the betta person at my stote( do the water changes and stuff) and I KNOW when a betta gets stolen. The display is usually right near the entrance where the “Good” cameras are. OP most likely the store knows they are stealing bettas but they haven’t hit the felony threshold yet.

You can report them yourself and get them banned. But if they are doing this at multiple stores they have quite a problem brewing. The private equity that brought petsmart is big on litigation rn and we’ve had a few people get busted for stealing which included bettas.

I’ll never understand the whole stealing betta mindset. Most of the time the thief won’t have the proper setup of knowledge to care for the fish. And the cup is temporary and very frequently charged and cleaned-or it’s supposed to be anyway.

  4. As someone who has already worked with animals professionally (parrots in my lucky life). I’d be more than happy to tell on this person through any channels. I’d email ur school (I already had to email a high school after some kid was threatening to cave my skull in if he ever saw me and then asked how my neighborhood by name was lol. All cause I called out improper care for a Scarlet macaw and he didn’t like that) so I love doing stuff like this to help animals
