so my mom won a betta fish at a raffle, and me being the emotional daughter i had to call dibs on it. my family never really cared for taking proper care of fish growing up but i'm determined to actually give him a good life!
So far i have a 5.5 gal tank, 3 live plants, driftwood, heater, filter, and an led light that i keep on for a couple hours a day. What else might i need? are they any specific products i should have?
I've already been recommended tannins, which i plan to get, and more plants.
what are your best tips? any name suggestions? and lastly, does anyone know what type of betta he is? all that i know is he is male😭

Given this unexpected new friend- you’re going to have to do a fish-in cycle so I would look through previous posts and such on the forum and supplement with Google/making your own posts to make sure you create a nice, healthy environment for him!
My tips for this situation- stay away from artificial where you can and if you MUST, use silk plants and stay away from sharp decor that might injure his fins. Live plants & natural decor are def the preferred way for his benefit though + the more plants for a betta, the better! & again- make sure to cycle your water!!
Best of luck friend!
Great start. Look up fish-in aquarium cycling if you haven’t already. You have some nice hiding places and plenty of swimming room.
For those plants (java fern?) I’d set a timer to 8 hours of light a day and adjust from there. The cheaper LEDS are somewhat weak but if it’s too much you’ll see quickly.
Most important is a decent heater, keeps their immune system functioning well. Then good quality food, I prefer Xtreme Betta Pellets but that’s because I can get it easy locally. Lots of people like Hikari pellets or Bug Bites.
Lucky fish. I think you’ve got this.
He has a white face 🥹, maybe peppermint, or candy cane?
