This is a new tank that we're still setting up. This is his new favourite spot but aside from telling him "no" and taking him off the tank whenever he starts drinking (not proving very effective) I'm not sure what to do. I'm worried about the safety of the fish if he keeps doing this when we move them in there. Any advice?

  1. That cat is soooo going to end up full body in the water, which will probably stop him jumping up there in the long term…. Get/make a lid.

  2. It’s not dangerous if it’s a freshwater tank. Once you put the light fixtures on it might be too difficult to get to the water. You can test the fish safety now by putting a swimming robot fish toy in there, they’re not expensive and it’s unlikely your cat will dive in but now is the time to test. My cat likes the tank water but doesn’t care about the fish at all even when some senseless guppies got very close to nibbling her tongue.
