This is Soren my male betta, he’s in a small 1.5 gal tank w/ some pothos cuttings, java moss, and some type of amazon sword. I’ve had him for about 3 months and plan to get him a 5 gallon once I make some money since I’m currently unemployed and a full time senior in high school. I do weekly to bi-weekly water changes and cleanings to avoid ammonia spikes in such a small tank. If you have any advice please help, and please be kind I’ve only recently got into the hobby!

I think you are doing great so far and I love your conscientiousness. Asking questions is the best way to learn. I bought two of my 6 gallon tanks on sale at Petco for about $35 each. They come with a glass lid. Check around to see next time they are available. A little Soren is lucky to have a mom or dad like you.

Other than upgrading to a four gallon at least, this looks great! If you’re looking to plant more when you have a bigger tank, Etsy has really cheap, high quality sellers.

Hii! I’m LOVING your tank and though you should upgrade I’m sure your baby is WAYYYY happier in a 1.5 than a cup!! You’re doing great :))

ONE THING: Pothos need their leaves outside of the water so ONLY roots in the water otherwise they will melt (looks like your pothos is floating on the surface I’m not sure if that will melt it I’m just warning)!!

this is good, but I will tell you the pothos is likely to rot overtime instead of do well as it’s not really an aquatic plant. You can grow it above the water with the roots, in but no leaves or to much stem in the water. Look for the nodes; the bumps along the vine and cut just below one and that part is where the roots will grow from.

Other than size – tank is amazing! It is pretty green, offers hideout, and you seem like a person who genuinely cares. Good luck picking up the bigger tank for your friend once you are able to!

Maybe there are some cheaper previously used ones avilable near your location? In my experience used tanks are way cheaper than new ones because once it is not needed, seller is eager to get rid of space-consuming glass cube, and it makes prices drop.

  6. I’m a new betta owner myself. Your set up looks great, especially if you’re planning to get a bigger tank. Does your lid have openings? If it doesn’t, remove the lid to “air out” the tank since bettas breathe air from the surface. Also if you don’t already do it, turn off the tank light once it starts getting dark out. Apparently bettas need like 10 hrs of dark to get a good sleep.

If you want a bigger tank I’d look into fb marketplace you should be able to find a tank for $1 a gallon tanks fantastic tho I’d try to raise the pothos leafs above the water the brown noodle things are the roots/ nodes that’s what you mainly want in the water, I say this because too much exposure to the water can cause the leafs to die and that would cause extra ammonia but still doing great 👍🏻

  9. He’s cute! Keep your eye on facebook marketplace. I regularly see 10 gallons selling for $10-$20 often times with other supplies. He’ll be fine in a 5 gallon but a 10 gallon is way better. It’ll be easier to keep control of the water parameters compared to a 5 gallon too. But seriously marketplace is the best place to find cheap tanks!!
