Yeah, just boil it first so it get sterilized and so it wont float

Boil it first, that’s usually enough to kill anything living in it, but you can do a peroxide dip if it’s funky

I’d also soak it for a few days. Sometimes a new stick can make your water turn brown.

If it’s from a leaf bearing tree and it’s suitably old yes. Would not risk it with a needle bearing tree due to sap residue being potentially harmful.

i’d suggest googling and trying to identify the wood. if it smells earthy and it’s hard wood then usually it’s safe but some woods can leach sap or other things. boil it or let it soak in a tub of water for a month or 2
