I was crappie and perch fishing and ended up with a 35" northern pike. I was rigged up with a small shiner on 6 pound test with a #12 hook in a 6 inch hole, nothing correct for pike fishing. Flag went off and the reel started screaming, figured it was a bass until I started pulling it in and it pulled back. Fought with it for a couple minutes just trying to get it to the hole to see what it was. When it came across I realized I had a problem, it was as big as the hole. For some reason it put it's head up through just right and I grabbed it's nose, which didn't work. I ended up have to sacrifice my two thumbs into its mouth to lip it. It worked and I landed it. I bled for the rest of the day but it was worth it.

  1. Big pike are always fun bycatch when you’re targeting something smaller. I caught my PB while finesse jigging for walleye and perch. Size 1500 reel, 6 pound test mono, and no leader. Just under 40 inches, and after dealing with tiny little walleye and perch bites all day, it felt like my ball jig was attacked by an aggressive boulder.

    10/10, would recommend.
