I’ve had these newly set up tanks for quite some time (4 gallon sphere and cube) and while my biorb has gotten some hate on here, i’m here to update everyone on Sushi and Mika, which are both doing really good! While these setups seem unconventional, they are working for my fish with some adjustments and extra care.

Biorb setup:

I basically changed everything except the tank. New light, new adjustable airpump, new heater. For substrate i am using old ceramic rings from a canister filter plus their ceramic rock substrate they provide, topped with enriched lava soil. Just planted it today with vallisneria and crypts, i also have some java ferns in here but i mostly moved them to the cube. I removed almost all hardscape (i felt like it was taking up too much space, and the substrate they provide is horrible for bettas as they usually get stuck or caught on the porous rocks), now he has a cave and a small piece of wood, along with some smooth river pebbles. (For context i bought this tank years ago and just recently took it out of storage).

Cube setup:

Took out the old piece of wood and replaced it with a smaller one, also wanted to clear up more space. I’ve moved most of the java fern from the biorb into here and today added some floating plants. Also the peace lilies i added are slowly getting over the melting phase and grew a new leaf!

The goal for these tanks is to plant them heavily enough that i don’t need to intervine too much (i do weekly 30-35% water changes). Both of my bettas are doing great! They got so much more colorful since i got them and i love how different their personalities are: Sushi is all sassy and mysterious while Mika is so silly and full of energy.

Here’s some photos of the tanks and their inhabitants!

I know these spheres are controversial due to the belief that they can damage the bettas vision (but it’s sounds like you’ve caught enough fire for that)

I think these set ups are beautiful! I would keep an eye on your top floaters, someone told me here that the lid ended up killing most of their duckweed but I’m not sure if they also had a clear lid or not 🙂

Thank you for learning and applying yourself to provide great environments for your bettas!
