They’re Amphipods. Some people call them freshwater shrimp but they are quite different than regular shrimp (although they are related).

Trout and panfish love love love these fresh water shrimps, scuds, grass shrimp.
The waters gotta be pretty clean to have these guys around.

  3. After learning more about scuds, ice fishing jigs make so much more sense lmao.

Most minnow style lures make sense but I always thought it was weird that fish loved invertebrate lures that just bounced around in the middle of the water. I thought they would cling to vegetation or the bottom.

Well it turns out that’s *exactly* what scuds do sometimes haha. Tried using an underwater camera for the first time this year and sometimes the scuds are so thick at the spot I’m fishing that it’s hard to distinguish them from the jig. They “pop” around just like a jig too. Super neat.

  4. i just figured out the snake river (and like a ton of freshwater areas) has these little buggers last year😭 don’t feel bad OP
